So, what genre is the book? Is it a historical – yes, most definitely, it’s set in the 1790s after all, although the protagonists face very modern dilemmas. Is it a romance – well yeah! It is about romantic love between two people. Is it a mystery – yes, there is a quest and traces of a whodunnit. There is also a war and its aftermath which could make it a military fiction. Okay, so it is a historical, military, romance, mystery fiction.
The genre definition helps readers decide how indulgent they would be. It allows the reader to be in a certain frame of mind, a certain context to enjoy the book. But it could also be limiting.I like to think of the book as genre bending, pushing boundaries and definitions just a little.
